If you want to understand how much heat is escaping from your building, you need to test the entire conditioned envelope—not just individual units.
That includes all apartments, corridors, stairwells, and lobbies—as long as they’re inside the insulated and airtight envelope.
The test setup is simple in theory, but only if those shared spaces have no permanent openings to the outside and can be prepared properly. Otherwise, your "straightforward" test turns into a leaky mess.
