Shuttle Bus Build Ep 8 | The Cabinet Episode

The cabinet extravaganza!
Savannah takes the lead on this episode explaining how the kitchen cabinets, sliding door closet, and overhead cabinets were made.

The overhead cabinets were constructed out of 3/4 inch ply with dividers and spacers. We mounted everything directly into the firing strips and metal framing of the bus. These cabinets don’t take up a lot of space but offer tons of storage within the living space. There is one cabinet above the kitchen, above the bed, and over the area where our couch/booth/bed will go.
The kitchen cabinets were next and while there’s a lot of ways to construct these cabinets, we chose sheets of ply connected by spacers. We like this method because it creates very clear compartments and offers a lot of surface area to mount drawers and slides. By turning the sink, we were able to fit everything we have in our bus kitchen into this slightly smaller space. Hooray!
The last project this week was constructing the closet at the end of the bed. Framing and supporting this closet proved to be a tricky task. We had to design a closet that is thinner at the bottom, comes up over the mattress and overhangs over the bed to take back some of the space lost by having a narrower bus. We actually love the look of this closet. It adds a really unique touch to an otherwise unusable space and makes practical use of the thin storage space at the end of the bed. We created replicas of our bus doors because they are one of our favorite designs elements in our bus. We’ll be changing a lot of other designs in this new bus, but we wanted to keep a few things the same.
