Soo Nipi House | A Lakeside Home Reborn from Fire
Perched on a high promontory overlooking Lake Sunapee, Soo Nipi House is a story of renewal — a home rebuilt from loss, designed for connection, craft, and nature.
Created for a brother and sister to share with their families, the house balances togetherness and privacy through two primary bedroom suites and a central living pavilion that opens toward the lake.
The structure is composed of three interlocking volumes, oriented to frame views of water, forest, and sky. Large sliding doors dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, extending life onto the terrace and immersing the family in the surrounding landscape.
Inside, Douglas fir beams, ceilings, and walls form a warm, tactile environment. Handmade tiles, crafted by local artisans, celebrate the spirit of regional craftsmanship. The hearth — oriented toward both the fire and the lake — becomes the emotional center of the home.
After a lightning strike destroyed the original cabin, the site was reborn through native replanting and careful ecological restoration. Now, a granite and fir pergola shades the living spaces, and a net-zero energy system powers the entire home through rooftop photovoltaics.
Rainwater management through downspouts, rain gardens, and dry wells helps recharge the natural water table — a quiet but essential gesture of respect to the land.
Soo Nipi House is more than a dwelling — it’s a conversation between memory and material, between loss and renewal, between craft and the calm surface of the lake.
