Session: Adopting Cloud Native at the SKAO to revolutionise our understanding of the Universe

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. It will have a uniquely distributed character: one observatory, operating two telescopes, on three continents for the global scientific community.

In order to deliver these capabilities, a highly distributed team with diverse and specialised software engineering and data processing skills crossing 3 continents, 16 countries, and 20 timezones, have been brought together. To support the delivery and integration of the associated software, the SKAO are in the process of adopting Agile development practices, centering collaboration around the GitLab social coding platform, and targeting a Cloud Native platform for delivery.

This presentation is a look into our journey so far, what we have discovered and where we hope to go as we marry modern software delivery practices with science.
